Lando Norris has explained how his plan to "detach" from F1 will be
key to aiding his pursuit of team-mate Oscar Piastri in the race
for the world championship. Norris goes into F1's summer break nine
points behind Piastri after victory in Hungary, with it becoming
clear that McLaren will have its first drivers' champion since
Lewis Hamilton in 2008. The two are nearly 100 points clear of Max
Verstappen in third place and have traded 11 of the 14 wins prior
to the summer break, with Norris winning three of the last four
races ahead of his team-mate in second. Earlier in the season,
Norris was fiercely critical of himself following mistakes in
qualifying and caused the first flashpoint between the title rivals
after hitting Piastri in Canada. Since then, Norris has only been
defeated by Piastri in Belgium, and believes that there is still
room for improvement in some aspects of his driving once the season
resumes. "I mean, not really, my confidence is high and I feel
good," Norris told Sky Sports F1 when asked if his Hungary victory
had given him any extra confidence. "I'm not lacking any of it, I
don't think I need any of it, and I feel like I am getting a good
amount out of the car, but could it be better? Yeah. "I still feel
like there are some things I need to work on, yes, my start and lap
one wasn't so good [in Hungary], but some of my lap ones have been
fine, and my starts have been okay. "So there are some
opportunities. I'm not making my life easy, I've just got to make
it that little bit easier than what it is right now. "I'll enjoy a
break, I'll detach and then spend some time with my team, trying to
work on some things and trying to improve and see what I can do
better. "But both of us are accepting that one of us is going to
win every round, and it is going to go to and fro for the rest of
the year."
