Despite several days passing since the official announcement, news of Adrian Newey’s departure from Red Bull continues to reverberate throughout the paddock. It’s truly something monumental, marking the end of a glorious era that propelled the Milton Keynes-based team to become one of the most successful in Formula 1 history in “just” twenty years.

Gunther Steiner surprised by Adrian Newey’s departure
Various figures in the paddock have commented on the separation between the English designer and Red Bull, eagerly awaiting to see what will be the next, and probably final, chapter of a legendary career.

Interviewed by RacingNews365, Gunther Steiner, who worked alongside Newey from 2006 to 2008, expressed considerable surprise upon learning of the sensational news: “What surprised me is that he could go work for another team as soon as next year. I think we are all surprised by this.”

According to the former Haas team principal, the true impact of Adrian Newey’s departure will only be seen in a few years: “Red Bull will have a good car in 2025 with or without Adrian. Will the car change in 2025 if he joins a team in ’25? No. But it’s 2026, that’s what I always see in Formula 1.” – he pointed out – “In the short term, that’s what I always see in Formula 1, it’s very clearly written what is happening and in the medium and long term. It’s about who will be in the right place in two or three years. That’s what Formula 1 needs now, with its investments and its people, because everything is long term.”

Ferrari with Lewis Hamilton as a suggestion
Among the many rumors circulating in recent days, the option of Ferrari for the British engineer to gain more ground, with the latter reportedly rejecting advances from Aston Martin despite the monumental offer presented by Lawrence Stroll.

According to Gunther Steiner, seeing Adrian Newey at Maranello wouldn’t be far-fetched, especially considering Lewis Hamilton’s decision to accept the prancing horse’s courtship after years of futile attempts: “It’s a bit like Lewis’s story, which surprised me, but am I shocked? No.”

“Adrian was there for a long time, and it’s just one of the things that happened at the beginning of the year. I don’t know the details. Maybe there was some friction. He simply decided: ‘I want to do something else before retiring because I’m still good.'”

Finally, speaking of the potential role Adrian Newey would play at Ferrari, Gunther Steiner responded with some ambiguity: “At the moment, I think he would fit in, but I don’t know in what role. I don’t know if he wants to work all year or if he just wants to give ideas and such, but I think Vasseur would make sure to incorporate him. And then, of course, working with Lewis would be a very nice thing for both.” – the former team principal of Haas concluded.
