Oscar Piastri scored a sensational pole position for the Dutch
Grand Prix, setting a new Zandvoort lap record in the process.
Lando Norris had dominated practice, finishing quickest in all
three sessions for the first time this season, but he had to give
way to to his McLaren team-mate in qualifying. Piastri had the edge
in Q1 by 0.131s, before Norris hit back in Q2, finishing just
0.090s clear with a new lap record at that stage of 1:08.874s,
11-thousandths of a second ahead of Max Verstappen's mark from
qualifying in 2021. In the crucial top-10 shoot-out, Piastri was
quicker than Norris on the first run by 0.012s, lowering the lap
record to 1:08.662s. Surprisingly, neither driver was able to
improve on their second run, giving Piastri his first pole position
in seven races. For McLaren, it is the first front-row lock-out
since Renault in 1982. Max Verstappen, who has won three of the
four grands prix at this circuit since the Netherlands returned to
the F1 calendar, was able to claim third, just over a quarter of a
second adrift. Catch the full qualifying results for the Dutch
