The start of the Austrian Grand Prix was aborted after Carlos Sainz
failed to get away at the start of the formation lap. As the cars
pulled away, Sainz failed to move off from 19th on the grid as he
reported the car was stuck and unable to move. Race control made
the decision to abort the start as pole-sitter Lando Norris came
through the final sector, initiating the procedure that results in
a 10-minute delay. Sainz was able to get going out of his grid box
right as the cars came onto the start-finish straight. But as Sainz
returned to the pit lane, the car began to smoke before flames
billowed from the rear brakes, ensuring he would not take part in
the remainder of the grand prix. Due to the aborted start, the race
length was shortened by one lap.
