Fernando Alonso has described how Aston Martin is going to use the
rest of the 2025 season to ensure it is fully ready to unleash
Adrian Newey. Newey joined as managing technical partner earlier
this year, with his full attention being on the 2026 rules overhaul
coming to grand prix racing. Aston Martin is one of the first teams
to switch focus and development time to next season. The hope is
that the new Honda works engine deal, a brand-new state-of-the-art
factory and wind tunnel coupled with Newey's arrival, will turn the
team into championship challengers, allowing Alonso to push for a
third crown to those he won back in 2005 and 2006. From 10 rounds
of the current season, Alonso's best result was seventh in Canada
last time out, having only scored points for the first time in
Spain with ninth, although he has finished 11th three times.
Reflecting on the situation, Alonso explained that the rest of 2025
was simply going to be about moulding Aston into a team capable of
being ready to unleash Newey's design next season. "It has been
challenging, but we have understood and we know the problem in the
car now, but we cannot put too much focus into solving the
problem," Alonso told the media, including RacingNews365. "Because
we need to think about the future and for 2026, but even if it is
too late, we will try to get better in the second part of the year,
and a lot of the motivation we have for next year is thanks to
him. "With all the difficulties we have had this year and the
problems we are facing, having him on board is giving us enough
confidence to look forward to 2026, and expectations will be high,
but with the feet on the ground, as we know how far behind we are
now. "Even if there is a change in regulations, we need to somehow
find better performance with this year's car, and we need to be
better. "Even if we had a fast car now, there are a couple of
areas we need to keep improving, so we are trying to use 2025 to
tackle these and be ready for [Newey] as well."
