Indianapolis 500 finishing order shaken up by late penalties with suspensions handed out

Three cars from the Indy 500 have failed their post-race inspections and have been sent to the bottom of the classifications, including second-place finisher Marcus Ericsson. The Swedish driver (car no. 28) and Andretti team-mate Kyle Kirkwood (no. 27) were found guilty of technical violations along with PREMA Racing's Callum Illot. The press release read: "During post-race inspection of car Nos. 27 and 28, INDYCAR discovered modifications to the Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) covers and cover-to-A-arm mounting points with unapproved spacers and parts. According to the INDYCAR rulebook, EMS covers must be used as supplied." Meanwhile, PREMA Racing's no. 90 entry (Illot) failed to meet the minimum endplate height and location specification. The change has promoted David Malukas to second and McLaren's Pato O'Ward to third. The full updated results can be found HERE . As a result all three have been re-ordered to the back of the field in their order from the original results with prize money and championship race points altered accordingly. Each car has also been handed a $100,000 fine and the team/competition manager for each has been placed on a one-race suspension to be served IndyCar race, in Detroit. The full reasons for the penalties, as stated by IndyCar, are below. What Andretti and PREMA Racing have been found in violation of Andretti - Rule 9.3.1. Improper Conduct – Any member attempting to or engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct, unsafe conduct, or conduct detrimental to racing; INDYCAR; and/or to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, whether during an Event or on/off the Track, may be subject to any or all penalties. - Rule 14.1.2. Questions to be submitted and will be answered via IRIS. Modifications must be approved seven (7) days prior to the date of intended use. - Rule 14.1.3. All parts provided by an Approved Supplier must be used as supplied without modification unless otherwise approved by INDYCAR and stated in these Rules or in update bulletins. PREMA Racing - Rule 9.3.1.
