Liam Lawson has expressed his regret at not being able to trial
improvements he was making to his Red Bull before his demotion.
Lawson was dropped by Red Bull after just two races with the senior
team after disappointing performances in Australia and China,
although he did set the second fastest race lap in the chaotic and
tricky Melbourne opener. The New Zealander was demoted back to
Racing Bulls, with then boss Christian Horner conceding it was a
mistake to promote Lawson so soon to replace Sergio Perez after
just 13 races, and having never started an F1 season. Reflecting
on his experience, Lawson feels steps being made never had the
opportunity to be implemented which could have saved his seat. "I
didn't have anywhere near enough time on two tracks that I had
never been to to really understand [the car]," Lawson told media,
including RacingNews365. "I didn't have enough feel for the car to
be able to comment on what its speed is like or things like that.
"We were working on things to improve it and make it better for me,
and I never got the chance to use it, so all I can comment on is
the Racing Bulls car because that's what I've spent most of my time
driving. "We're always learning and developing and trying things,
and everybody has developed their cars, so we are not finding
three-tenths of lap-time in an upgrade. "We're finding
half-a-tenth, so it is small margins, and it is the first full
season [I've had], so there are things along the way that I am
learning."
