Formula E has cancelled qualifying for the opening race of this weekend's Tokyo E-Prix double-header, due to unsafe track conditions caused by significant rainfall. Rain was a major concern ahead of the day, with the drivers having been met by wet conditions from the get-go of second practice on Saturday morning. The rain failed to stop ahead of qualifying and actually intensified, to the extent that it was deemed unsafe for the session to take place. As a result, the results from second practice will determine the grid for Saturday's race, putting championship leader Oliver Rowland on pole position. Further heavy rain is forecast; however, the weather is projected to be more promising for 15:00 local time, when the race is due to get underway. Rowland will start from pole position in Nissan's home race as mentioned, with Mahindra's Edoardo Mortara alongside him.
