Lance Stroll received a disastrous 10-second time penalty in the Canadian Grand Prix – his home event.  The Aston Martin driver had been towards the back of the field the entire race, until he dropped completely to the bottom of the running field after serving a heavy punishment.  Stroll was handed the heavy penalty at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after being judged as having forced Pierre Gasly off the circuit, on the approach to the penultimate corner.  Gasly found himself pushed onto the grass and quickly demanded over the Alpine radio for Stroll to be penalised, which he was.  At the time of the penalty being served on lap 53, George Russell held a two-second lead over Max Verstappen.
