McLaren rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have been warned that
resorting to 'psychological games' in the title race would make
them "look cheap." The pair are set to resume their battle for the
world title at the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, with Piastri
leading the standings by nine points with 10 rounds remaining. Not
since Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg between 2014-2016 has there
been an intra-team battle for the world title, with both Hamilton
and Rosberg resorting to psychological means to try and gain the
upper hand on the other. Hamilton won the 2014 and 2015 titles with
Rosberg snatching away the '16 crown before promptly retiring, not
willing to go to such extremes again. But former F1 driver Perry
McCarthy believes if Piastri and Norris follow a similar path, it
risks looking "cheap." "Some people can do that if they like, and
I've had some people try it with me, and I just started laughing,"
McCarthy told RacingNews365 when asked if either driver could
deploy psychological games. "I see it as a waste of energy to try
and do that to another driver psychologically. "The way to win is
to actually be faster and win on track, and do the job; that is
what they both need to do. "I think it would be fairly silly if
either of them tries psychological games because I don't think it
would work on the other one, and it kind of makes you look a little
bit cheap."
