2025 KGM SsangYong Torres caught on camera ahead of Australian launch

The first all-new model from SsangYong – soon to be known as KGM in Australia – has been spotted in Melbourne before its launch.

The 2025 KGM SsangYong Torres – the first new model from the Korean brand with KGM branding in Australia – has been caught on camera by a keen-eyed Drive reader in Melbourne ahead of its local launch.

The petrol-engined KGM SsangYong Torres is expected to arrive in Australia around October, when SsangYong will begin transitioning to the new KGM brand, first launched in its South Korean home market 18 months ago.

As Drive exclusively revealed this week, KGM will continue to use the SsangYong name in its marketing for the next several years to transfer any brand cachet developed since it first launched in Australia in 1997.

SsangYong badging will disappear from the brand's cars – replaced with KGM – but the company's winged logo will continue to be used.

A mid-size SUV similar in size to a Mitsubishi Outlander or Hyundai Tucson in a class led by the Toyota RAV4, the Torres is the brand's first all-new model in Australia since the Korando arrived in late 2019, shortly after SsangYong re-launched here under a factory-backed distributor.

The KGM SsangYong Torres is expected to feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine – also found in the smaller Korando – with 120kW and 280Nm, matched to a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, and front- or all-wheel drive.

An all-electric version of the Torres, known as the EVX, is also on the radar for an Australian launch. It has a 73.4kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery and a front-mounted 152kW/339Nm electric motor, with a WLTP-rated 462-kilometre combined driving range.

Available equipment includes 18-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an electric tailgate, LED exterior lighting, adaptive cruise control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and interior mood lighting.

Measuring 4705 millimetres long, 1890mm wide and 1720mm tall, with a 2680mm wheelbase, the Torres offers a 703-litre boot with the second-row in place – likely measured to the roof – or 1662 litres with the rear bench folded flat.

In the United Kingdom, it is rated to tow up to 1500 kilograms unbraked or 500kg unbraked.

A coupe-styled version of the Torres, the KGM SsangYong Actyon, was unveiled in South Korea this week and is under consideration for Australia, while an electric dual-cab 'lifestyle' ute relative will debut in the coming months with batteries from Chinese electric-car specialist BYD.

The 2025 KGM SsangYong Torres mid-size SUV is due to arrive in Australian showrooms around October.
