2025 MG S5 electric SUV shown ahead of official reveal: Will it replace the ZS EV?

The MG S5 – a higher-riding sibling to the MG 4 hatchback – has been uncovered in regulatory documents before its official reveal.

The 2025 MG S5 electric small SUV – a potential successor to the current ZS EV – has been leaked online ahead of its official reveal.

Images of the MG S5 have appeared on the Chinese Government's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) database, which often reveals new cars before their planned debut.

The new car has a similar design language to the MG 4 hatchback and Cyberster convertible, and is likely based on the same dedicated Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) for the brand's latest electric vehicles.

It has not been confirmed if the MG S5 will replace the current MG ZS EV, which launched in 2019 and has been adapted from an internal-combustion platform.

An all-new ZS is due in Australia soon with petrol-only or full-hybrid powertrain options – but there has been little news on an all-electric version.

Measuring 4476 millimetres long, 1849mm wide and 1621mm tall, with a 2730mm wheelbase, the MG S5 is 153mm longer, 40mm wider and at least 4mm lower than the ZS EV, with a 145mm longer wheelbase.

The larger size of the S5 compared to the ZS EV positions it closer to the BYD Atto 3, which is officially classified as a mid-size SUV in Australia – but it is similar in size to other cars at the larger end of the small SUV segment, like the Toyota Corolla Cross and Nissan Qashqai.

The MIIT database lists two variants for the rear-wheel-drive MG S5, both with a 125kW single electric motor – identical to the entry-level MG 4 Excite 51.

It is likely other high-spec variants would become available with more-powerful motors, larger batteries, and a dual-motor all-wheel drive option like the MG 4 XPower and Cyberster.

The first MG S5 variant listed in the database is said to weigh 1615 kilograms, while the other is listed at both 1685kg and 1740kg – more than the ZS EV, but similar to the MG 4 hatchback.

CarNewsChina reports the S5 will use lithium-iron phosphate batteries assembled as part of a joint-venture between MG's parent SAIC and battery manufacturer CATL.

Available equipment shown includes 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and gloss-black side mirror caps.

MG is expected to use an S suffix for its crossover models on a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) architecture – starting with the Tesla Model Y-sized MG S9 fastback revealed earlier this year, a rebranded model from SAIC's Rising Auto marque – while passenger cars will have a number only, like the MG 4 EV.
