One 2022 BMW 8 Series Jeff Koons edition coming to Australia

Ever wanted to own and drive a BMW Art Car? A new special-edition 8 Series is offering that chance – but only one is coming to Australia for a deep-pocketed buyer. One special-edition 2022 BMW M850i Gran Coupe designed by American artist Jeff Koons – officially known as the 2022 BMW ‘THE 8 X JEFF KOONS’ – is coming to Australia this year. One out of the global production run of 99 cars will be offered by BMW Australia between July to September 2022, with pricing – while still to be confirmed – likely to be much higher than a standard M850i xDrive Gran Coupe’s $282,900 plus on-road costs. The new M850i special edition was designed by American artist Jeff Koons, also responsible for the 17th BMW ‘Art Car’, based on a 2010 M3 GT2 that raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Jeff Koons edition is painted in a unique livery inspired by pop art, with ‘POP!’ lettering, “vapour thrust” images and “exploding lines of colour at the rear” that make the car look like a comic book on wheels. Incorporating 11 different colours, the livery on each car requires 285 hours of manual work to complete at BMW’s Dingolfing and Landshut plants, with just four vehicles painted each week. Inside, the lucky owner will receive red and blue leather seats “reflecting the colours of superheroes from the comic book universe as well as those of the company’s high-performance division, BMW M”. Other highlights include dark red carpeting and centre console upholstery, tan leather door cards, a cupholder lid with “edition badging” and Koons’ signature, red brake calipers on the outside, and with the vehicle, a certificate signed by Jeff Koons and BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. The Australia-bound 2022 BMW 8 X Jeff Koons edition will be built in right-hand drive, allowing it to be registered and driven on local roads, should its new owner choose.
