A jubilant Lando Norris labelled his victory at the British Grand
Prix "everything I've ever wanted to achieve" after claiming a home
win in a chaotic race with changeable conditions. He also called it
"as stressful as it gets", whilst accidentally dropping the f-word,
something that could see him called before the stewards. The
McLaren driver beat team-mate Oscar Piastri, who backed off on the
final lap, by 6.8 seconds at Silverstone, after the Australian
received a 10-second time penalty for a safety car infringement. In
doing so, the 25-year-old reduced his F1 drivers' championship
deficit to Piastri to just eight points at the halfway stage of the
season. "Oh wow, it's beautiful," Norris told Jenson Button, who
was conducting the post-race interviews in Parc Ferme. "Everything
I've dreamed of, I guess, everything I've ever wanted to achieve.
Apart from a championship, this is good as it gets, in terms of
feelings, in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it. "This is
where it all started for me, actually, was watching you on TV many
years ago, and now, thankfully, I've been able to have my go.
"Incredible race, stressful as always, but the support from the
fans, it made the difference today. So I've got to thank them for
it all." 'Don't fuck it up' When asked what was going through his
mind during the final few laps, when victory looked certain, Norris
highlighted his "number one rule", which might draw the ire of the
FIA stewards. "Your mind just goes pretty blank," he replied. "So,
everything you might think before the race, you forget" "The main
thing is always just don't fuck it up, that's rule number one. But
the last few laps, I was just looking into the crowd, I was just
trying to take it all in, enjoy the moment, because it might never
happen again. "Hope it does, but these are memories that I'll bring
with me forever. So, incredible achievement."
