Lewis Hamilton has revealed he does not know how F1 rivals balance
the demands of racing with having a family, highlighting his
preference to fully focus on the rigours of driving in Formula 1.
The Ferrari driver explained he does not want to have any "regrets"
or wish that he could have "given more" to his career. Although the
40-year-old has been publicly single for the past decade, he dated
former Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger between his
debut F1 season in 2007 and 2015. When asked about the difficulties
of having a private life alongside his commitment to Formula 1,
Hamilton explained his wonder at how the likes of Max Verstappen
and Nico Hulkenberg, both fathers, blend the two sides of their
lives. "Yes, it's very complicated, especially in today's world,"
the seven-time F1 drivers' champion told RTBF. "I see other drivers
and I wonder how they manage: some have children, are married, have
girlfriends." Hamilton reflected on his own journey and the
different path he charted, claiming he can look at other avenues
when he retires from motorsport. "I went through that when I was in
my twenties. I made a different choice: I decided to maximise the
time I have here [in F1] because it's shorter than people think,"
he said. "I don't want to have any regrets, or think that I could
have given more. For the last ten years, I've focused on my
performance. And when I retire, I'll be able to do what I
want. I'll be able to dedicate myself to other things without
constraints." Winning with Ferrari Despite enduring a difficult
start to life with Ferrari, the 105-time grand prix winner
maintained that his immediate concern is returning the Scuderia to
its former glory. "As long as I'm competing, I stay focused on my
health, my well-being, my mental health and my driving technique. I
want to be the best engineer I can be and the best team-mate, too,"
he continued. "That's my main goal: I want to win. "I've been lucky
enough to win with great teams in the past - with Mercedes, with
McLaren, it was incredible. But my dream is to win a title with
Ferrari. It hasn't happened in a long time. "Ferrari has all the
ingredients to win, you just have to put it all together. That's
what I'm trying to do behind the scenes with Fred Vasseur and the
team."
