From runway to road trip

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had to improvise their journey home after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix when their private flight from Baku to Nice was diverted to Genoa due to bad weather. Stranded a few hours from Monaco, the former Ferrari team-mates did what F1 drivers do best: they drove.

Post-Baku detour

Leclerc, who finished ninth, and Sainz, third, often travel together to and from races. This time, after landing in Italy, the pair and their entourages hit the road to complete the final leg to Monaco — and shared a short clip of the unexpected detour on social media.

A lighter end to a heavy weekend

After a demanding race shaped by strategy, DRS trains and narrow margins, the unscheduled road trip offered a rare slice of levity. The on-track battles will resume in Singapore, but for one night at least, the main task was negotiating traffic on the Autostrada.
