I HAVE A FRIEND & WANT TO KEEP HIM

I have a racing friend who moved to Missouri from California 10 years ago. His kid was the same age as my kid, so we bonded. He races in the Senior 40 class with me and is much faster than I am, although he doesn’t win all that often. Sometimes he would tell me stories of how he used to race the AMA Supercross series back in 1989. He said that he was close friends with Jeff Ward, Jody Weisel, Larry Brooks, Mitch Payton and Goat Breker. I looked his name up in the Vault website, and he didn’t even appear in the results from the San Diego Supercross or Anaheim Supercross in the 1980s. Is he lying to me?
It would have been helpful if you told us his name, but we understand that you are trying to avoid embarrassing your friend. The truth is, MXA has lots of friends and test riders who raced AMA Supercrosses whose names aren’t in the Vault website either. The Vault is a great resource for looking up the results of AMA Supercross and National races from 1974 to 2024. Compiling it was a massive task, and, for the sake of brevity, the AMA Supercross results in the Vault do not include heat races, semis or Last Chance results. It only reports full results of top-20 points-paying positions in the main events. Your friend could have raced all 15 rounds of the 1989 Supercross series, made the night shows, and finished 10th in his heat, but if he didn’t make the top four in the Last Chance Qualifier, then he didn’t make the Vault. Thus, his name wouldn’t be in the Vault, even if he was in every race.
