Fernando Alonso has detailed Adrian Newey's involvement at the
Aston Martin team has been "incredible" to date. Following almost
20 years at Red Bull, Newey left the energy drink-backed squad and
joined Aston Martin at the head of its technical department earlier
this season. Regarded as one of the greatest F1 car designers in
the sport's history, the signing was seen as a key hire for Aston
Martin, who is hoping to take strides up the pecking order next
season under fresh technical regulations on a strong foot. Earlier
in the year, Alonso spoke about catching up with Newey during lunch
to discuss the team and certain ideas. When asked by RacingNews365
if those meetings are still happening, Alonso stated: "Yes, when I
get the chance. "But I saw him at a concert last night," Alonso
added with a laugh. "He's not available now!" Aston Martin endured
a challenging opening phase to the campaign, but it has taken steps
forward of late, scoring points at five of the previous six grands
prix. Newey has no involvement in the 2025 project as he puts his
entire focus into next year's car, which will undergo dramatic
changes amid one of the sport's biggest ever regulation changes.
Having been part of the Aston Martin squad for almost half a year
now, Newey has left Alonso amazed by how the 66-year-old operates.
"It was never his priority from day one [to work on the current
car]," Alonso said. "Even if we probably all insist a little bit to
have a look at it. "He is very focused on next year and he has his
own way. "It's great to see him working and thinking [about] things
or problems that we may face. "Even by race seven, after some of
the first upgrades and things like that. It is incredible."
