Former F1 driver Martin Brundle wishes the world could "rewind" to
post-qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix, to stop Lewis Hamilton
from calling himself "useless". After a troubled session at the
Hungaroring, the seven-time F1 champion berated himself, urging
Ferrari to sign a new driver. Despite previously claiming nine pole
positions at the Budapest venue, Hamilton was eliminated in Q2
after only managing 12th on the grid. To add to his struggles,
Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc secured pole position. It
resulted in a raft of staggering comments from the 40-year-old, who
said to Sky F1 : "Yeah, I'm useless. Absolutely useless." He later
stated: "[The] Team has no problem, you see the car's on pole, so
we'll need to change driver." It was the most dejected Hamilton had
appeared all season, in what has been a troubling first campaign
with Ferrari. Challenges settling into the Italian squad and
adjusting to the Scuderia's culture after 12 seasons with Mercedes
were expected. However, Hamilton is the only driver in the top
seven of the standings without a podium. The Briton has not
appeared on the rostrum in 15 races – a career worst. Brundle
wishes the 105-time race winner had not been so hard on himself
after qualifying in Hungary, due to concerns that the sharp
comments will remain present for a long period. "He was down,
wasn't he?" said Brundle on Sky Sports F1 . "And I think I found it
a very difficult watch, without doubt. "I wish we could, for
Lewis, rewind to [Saturday] and edit that out for him, because
that'll play out for a very long time, and it was probably better
unsaid, but that was his feeling at that moment. "He wears his
heart on his sleeve, we know that. But yeah, difficult times. And
the other [Ferrari], Charles being on pole, that's very much salt
in his wounds."
