Charles Leclerc warns Max Verstappen's penalty escape in Singapore could spell trouble for Formula 1

Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has raised concerns about Max Verstappen’s lack of penalties following multiple incidents during last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix qualifying session. The Dutchman, the championship leader, faced investigations for three separate incidents but received only two reprimands. Moreover, no action was taken regarding a chaotic situation involving several cars in the final sector.
Doubts have arisen regarding his actions, including impeding AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and coming to a stop in the pit lane to create space, considering previous penalties imposed on competitors for similar infractions.
Speaking to the media before the Japanese Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc addressed these concerns about consistency in penalties and their potential consequences for Formula 1: “It is always an open discussion with the FIA and trying to explain to them what our point of view is and improve. I am sure we will have that discussion in the [drivers’] briefing.” – the Ferrari man explained during Thursday media day at the Suzuka circuit.
When asked about this topic and his idea regarding the fact that Max Verstappen was not penalized at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore, which proved a clear lack of consistency from the Formula 1 stewards, seven-time F1 world champions and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton pointed out that: “I didn’t really see [the incidents]. I was in the pit lane when everyone stopped and I couldn’t see what was happening up ahead. We always push and work as closely we can with the FIA to have consistency and there is some variation, so we need to continue to work on it for sure.” – he concluded.
