Gerhard Berger urges Ferrari to “learn from mistakes” and come back stronger in 2023

Austrian former Formula One racing driver Gerhard Berger, who twice finished 3rd overall in the championship, both times driving for Ferrari, was one of the most important figures which took part in the opening of the Trento Sport Festival, the event that turned the spotlight on the Trentino capital, transforming it into the sports capital thanks to the Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

The former Ferrari driver, who is currently managing the DTM series, was asked about his Formula 1 years driving for the Maranello team and also for McLaren, where he raced alongside Ayrton Senna:

“Even when I realized that he was a better driver than me, that he was an exceptional driver” – Gerhard Berger replied, when asked about Ayrton Senna – “Our friendship did not change, in fact it got even stronger”.

The jokes that Gerhard Berger made with the Brazilian champion are well-known stories and there was a great relationship between them, which was difficult to replicate between two teammates.

The former F1 driver is still a Ferrari fan at heart and wanted to shares his thoughts on the Maranello team’s performance in the 2022 Formula 1 season, a championship that started so promising for the Italian side, but gradually turned to a season full of regrets:

“Mattia Binotto has done a great job with the car, as evidenced by the progress made from 2021 to this year. Ferrari began with the season with the best car on the grid. It’s tough because Red Bull is used to fighting up front. Ferrari not yet. They have a great car and great drivers, but the team has made some mistakes. It’s somewhat normal. The important thing for 2023 will be to learn from those mistakes” – the Austrian former Formula One racing driver pointed out, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Gerhard Berger, therefore, looks to the future of the Maranello team with an optimistic view, even if he knows the strength of his Austrian compatriots from Red Bull very well.
