One of Australia’s most popular new vehicles has undergone a mid-life refresh, bringing new technology, looks and safety to the third-generation Isuzu D-Max – with price rises of up to $3000.

  • 2024 Isuzu D-Max pricing and specifications
  • New front and rear styling
  • X-Rider variant added to regular D-Max range
  • Priced from $32,490 to $70,500 plus on-road costs, up $500 to $3000

The facelifted 2024 Isuzu D-Max has arrived in Australia as the biggest update for the third-generation ute since it arrived in local showrooms three and a half years ago.

Price rises of $500 and $3000 have been applied to coincide with revised styling, technology changes, the return of volume and tuning dials – but the introduction of touch-sensitive controls for key infotainment functions – and updated safety features.

Isuzu Ute Australia says it has kept “customer feedback in mind” in retaining drive-away offers for the base-model D-Max 1.9-litre single-cab chassis manual 4×2 ‘traffic controller’ and top-of-the-range X-Terrain 3.0-litre dual-cab 4×4 utes.

However it has not addressed a price anomaly that has long seen the X-Terrain be cheaper than the next model down, the LS-U+, because it does not have a drive-away deal which effectively wipes about $6000 off the price of the top-of-the-range model – even though it is not as well equipped.

At the other end of the range, the 1.9-litre 4×2 single-cab chassis auto is about $11,000 more expensive than the base-model manual – rather than the $2000 difference in RRPs – because it lacks a drive-away offer that wipes thousands of dollars worth of on-road costs off the purchase price.

There are no changes to the engines for the 2024 facelift, retaining a choice of 1.9-litre or 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinders, depending on the model.

Visual changes for the Isuzu D-Max include a new front fascia with reshaped headlights and a bolder grille, plus new three-tier tail lights – rather than two light segments – and restyled wheels.

Inside, Isuzu has added volume and tuning dials below the touchscreen, replacing the fiddly buttons in the previous model – which Isuzu Ute Australia admits is meant to address commonly received feedback.”

However the physical switches below the touchscreen for home, phone controls, back and other functions have been replaced by touch-sensitive controls.

Ahead of the driver is now a 7.0-inch digital instrument display on LS-U, LS-U+ and X-Terrain model grades, while the existing 4.2-inch instrument screen and analogue dials now exclusive to cheaper models have been “redesigned”, according to Isuzu.

Entry-level variants (including the SX, LS-M, and X-Rider) now get a larger 8.0-inch infotainment screen – up from 7.0-inch – while more expensive variants (LS-U, LS-U+, and X-Terrain) continue with the same 9.0-inch display.

Both screens have been updated with “completely new” software that now includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support – rather than the previous model’s mix of wireless CarPlay and wired Android Auto.

The new system also contains new off-road angle displays, tyre pressure monitoring screens, and 4×4 driveline information.

Drivers can also tweak the advanced safety systems using the central infotainment display, while USB-A ports have been swapped out for newer USB-C units.

The cabin is accented by new trim finishes claimed to have been influenced by the Japanese paper-folding art known as Muira Origami.

The X-Rider limited-edition variant has become a permanent member of the range (below), based on the mid-specification LS-M but with black exterior highlights, dark grey grille surround, a sports bar, ‘X’ badging, black 17-inch alloy wheels, and soft tonneau cover.

Inside, the X-Rider features vinyl flooring, fabric upholstery, and dark accents such as black headlining, door handles and steering wheel spokes.

As before, the Isuzu D-Max is available with a 1.9-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine developing 110kW/350Nm outputs, or a 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with 140kW/450Nm.

Power is sent to the rear wheels, or a part-time four-wheel-drive system, depending on the model.

Manual transmissions are now only available on entry-level SX model grades. A six-speed Aisin-sourced transmission is the alternative.

Tweaks to the middle-of-the-range D-Max LS-M include softer rear suspension for the dual-cab body style, attributed to “customers who wanted improved comfort and handling when unladen and improved rear suspension travel and articulation when off-roading.”

The D-Max LS-M cab-chassis retains a ‘heavy-duty’ suspension tune.

The incoming 2024 Isuzu D-Max will inherit the 2023 model’s five-star ANCAP safety rating result, awarded as part of a re-test in 2022 to reset the six-year expiry of the original safety rating awarded in 2020.

Several safety systems have been updated for 2024, including a new-generation stereo camera – which powers the autonomous emergency braking technology, among other features – claiming a 200 per cent wider field of view, now 120 degrees.

The traffic sign recognition system now pairs with the adaptive cruise control to allow drivers to quickly change the cruise control’s speed when the car detects a new speed limit.

The rear cross-traffic alert system can now apply the brakes if the car detects passing traffic, pedestrians or cyclists while reversing – rather than only warning the driver of the hazard.

A ‘Rough Terrain Mode’ from the seven-seat MU-X has been added to D-Max 4×4 variants, which maximises off-road traction in technical and slippery conditions by modulating brake force on individual wheels when slip is detected.

The new-generation software works when the D-Max’s rear differential lock is engaged.

Entry-level D-Max SX model grades are fitted with cloth upholstery, vinyl flooring, manual air conditioning (no climate control), rain-sensing wipers, and halogen headlights – rather than the bi-LEDs of more expensive models.

The new 2024 Isuzu D-Max is due in local showrooms imminently, ahead of a formal on-sale date of 1 May 2024. Check back on Drive on that date for a full review of the updated D-Max range.
