Toyota’s smallest SUV has been updated with additional safety tech and a new multimedia system – but the price is up again, too.

The 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross city SUV has been updated with new safety technology and infotainment joined by exterior styling tweaks, with prices increasing an average of $913 across the line-up – after it went hybrid-only late last year.

The entry-level Yaris Cross GX FWD (front-wheel drive) hybrid now starts at $30,900 plus on-road costs – previously $30,000 – up from $28,990 about 12 months ago.

The range-topping Yaris Cross Urban AWD (all-wheel drive) hybrid list price has risen by $880 to $39,880 plus on-road costs.

Apart from the GR Sport – which is front-wheel drive only – all models are available in FWD or AWD, with AWD still offered at a $3000 premium.

After Toyota dropped petrol versions of the Yaris Cross in December 2023, the latest update sees the seven-model all-hybrid line-up now standard with updated crash-avoidance technology.

This includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) now featuring motorcycle and oncoming vehicle recognition, adding to its previous pedestrian and cyclist detection capabilities.

Toyota also says new cameras and sensors enable a wider detection area for the driver assistance technology, increasing the effectiveness of the systems, as well as improvements to its adaptive cruise control and lane trace assist.

Inside, the Yaris Cross now includes a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster – replacing digitised speed and rpm read-outs flanking a 4.2-inch screen on top models – plus fresh seat pattern designs, a centre console armrest and new rear-seat grab handles.

The previous 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen has been replaced by an 8.0-inch version running new software – with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, previously wired-only – while the USB ports have been upgraded to USB-C for faster smartphone charging and data transfer.

On the outside there are new grille insert designs on all models except the GR Sport, while a roof-mounted rear spoiler is new on all variants.

Exterior colour choices have been pared back from eight to seven, with Tuscan Gold dropped from the palette.

Above the entry-level GX, the GXL now adds privacy glass as standard, while the Urban trim level includes a new 18-inch alloy wheel finish.

There are no changes to the 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid and continuously variable transmission (CVT) powertrain used across the range, which makes a combined 85kW/141Nm.

Year-to-date, the Yaris Cross was the second-best-selling vehicle in the 'SUV Light' category at the end of February, behind the Mazda CX-3 but closely followed by the Kia Stonic.
