Ferrari want six-month block of gardening leave for Mattia Binotto amid resignation

The discussions linked to the resignation presented by Mattia Binotto from the role of ‘Managing Director and Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari’ are reaching their final stages. As reported by the racingnews365.com website in an article written by F1 expert Dieter Rencken, the day of the official announcement should already be tomorrow, Tuesday 29 November. The parties are obviously negotiating the terms of the early separation with respect to a contract expiring for Mattia Binotto at the end of 2023.

The current team principal joined Ferrari in 1995 within the engine department in the team dedicated to testing, moving to the official team from 1997 to 2003. He then held the position of ‘Race engine engineer’ for 5 years until 2006 , then in 2007-2008 he assumed the position of ‘Chief Engineer, Race and assembly’ becoming in 2009 Head of Engine and KERS Operation. From 2014 to 2016 he was the deputy director of the department dedicated to the engine and electronics in conjunction with the debut of the power unit era and then assumed the position of technical director from 2017 to 2019.

Finally, from 2019 onwards he first became technical director and team principal of Scuderia Ferrari and after an internal reorganization that led to the fragmentation of the role of technical director. Mattia Binotto is now precisely ‘Managing Director and Team Principal Scuderia Ferrari’.

The fact that no term related to the technical field appears in Mattia Binotto’s official job title is a significant detail in terms of gardening leave, i.e. the period of inactivity that a person under contract with a team must respect when, after a working experience agrees to end the deal ahead of its initial deadline, to continue his career at a different team.

As formulapassion.it expert Alberto Antonini wrote, already in the past Mattia Binotto had several teams interested in him – Racing Point in that case – outside of Ferrari ready to sign such a paddock figure with an indisputable technical background especially in the Formula 1 field. Pino Allievi also underlined that the eventual departure of Mattia Binotto from Maranello is followed closely by other teams currently registered in the F1 championship or which have already formalized entry into the sport.

According to the Dutch newspaper, the gardening leave period that Mattia Binotto will have to respect before possibly joining a different team will be six months, the same that James Allison had from July 2016 to January 2017, when he left Scuderia Ferrari to later join Mercedes.

Mattia Binotto’s current contract would have been available until the end of the 2023 Formula 1 season. This factor compared with the fact that on paper, since he does not hold a technical position, Mattia Binotto is not obliged to take a gardening leave period, mean that an expected six months of inactivity for the Italian engineer represent a plausible solution.
